Ok so I have to admit...going against the norm of feeding your baby has been hard. It's hard to do something different and feel encouraged. So tonight I stayed up late to try to get some questions answered and with that I found a great forum.

I have been wanting to revert to the baby puree world...(no judgment of those that do..much love to ya!!! ) mostly because I have questions that I have not found answers for. The forum helped with that. But so far I have seen some pretty amazing things. Silas took a turn this week. We had two weeks of gagging. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes it was not. In the end I learned that kids will gag up whatever does not fit down their throat. I always was afraid of them chocking..but that's not the case anymore (of course we won't give him marbles or mini weenies). They just have the most amazing gag reflex. Silas has eaten avocado, sweet potatoes, bananas, pears, apple and O's. I tried oatmeal the other day and he gagged...so we will try that tomorrow again I think. I was watching a video of a 7 month old eating a whole broccoli stem. So I think tomorrow I'll steam up some broccoli and give it that a try also. Hopefully that will be on video. So the big thing that people keep asking me is "what's the big deal...how is this so different?" Well I say...there's no puree, just whole food. That way babies learn a great deal about texture and taste early so that they are less picky. (And um, no, Uncle Tim,...Silas will not be nursing at 3 years old...your so in trouble for posting that on facebook). FYI...The goal is that by 12 months they are eating happily with the family at all meals and not picky. Here's a good article from the BBC on Baby Led Feeding.

I'm still learning. Some days are harder then others. But Silas is already sleeping better for naps and at night, so I know that he's getting more happiness in his belly. It's way less work too. I mean all I do is throw veggies and fruit on his tray and he goes to town.
For those who are thinking I'm silly for posting all this info...it's also for those who are out their looking for info (like me). Key words are helpful for searching....
Special shouts to Anna...I know your loving this....This video is for you!!(heheh)
Listen closely at the end....

Oh, yes, lovely video. Hey, I think it's great that you're trying new stuff, in fact you may have convinced me to give it a try. I have always noticed the incredible gag-reflex that my kids have. But that doesn't mean I'll throw away my baby spoons...
ReplyDeletecome on girls! Go get 'em....
ReplyDeleteGlad that you feel some encouragement and help in this dept. of motherhood.
Hey mom this banana (at least the part that made it inside of me) is goin right through me...help!
ReplyDeleteHey Chica!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's not the "norm" per se, but just not what's USA tradition and what is spread, probably by fear, because of something that may have happened (maybe I just mooted myself?). There's people out there like you! And what's wrong with nursing 'til three? : )

ReplyDeletePS Neither my second nor my third has any "solids" of any kind until 8 months, just good ole momma's milk!
Yeah...what's wrong with nursin' 'til 3?
ReplyDeleteGlad your feeling more encouraged. If you were lazy like me, you wouldn't need any encouragement--sorry I haven't been more help there!
Ok ladies...everyone just calm down. I have no problem with anyone nursing till 3 years of age. In fact I totally support that. I personally, knowing myself, would have a hard time nursing that long. For those that have the self sacrificing ability to do it, I admire. It's just not for me personally. And I didn't want anyone to think that BLW was somehow only for those that wanted to breastfeed thru toddler hood. It's for everyone...even those who only breastfeed till 12 months. :)
ReplyDeleteOh no! Not a complaint, but an encouragement to you if you want to! Wanted to counter pressure anyone not too keen on it. The whole point of your post, you were trying to find encouragement! Personally, it was hard and easy to stop nursing my third at 16 or so months. I was too busy with rambuctious boys, but she's my last baby too...
ReplyDeleteOur daughter is 8 months old, and I'm giving her solids like french toast, quesadillas, broccoli, cheerios, etc. I'm also pureeing what I make for dinner so she can get some protein (like chicken, potatoes & peas OR cod, broccoli, & cheese sauce). That way she's getting chewing practice and some nutrition without me worrying too much about her choking.
ReplyDeleteHi Post a Comment!!!
